“Germinates from” is the lowest soil or compost temperature at which the source says seeds germinate or can be sown. German and UK sources give centimetres and °C, US sources inches and °F. We convert and round: inches to 0.5 cm, °F to whole °C, and show both. “–” means our sources give no value for it.

Rule of thumb for sowing depth

  • Sow about two to three times as deep as the seed is wide. (Cornell Garden-Based Learning)
  • Fine seeds are sown shallow. (Sächsische Gartenakademie (LfULG))
