Questions and answers

What does “average last frost” mean?

In half the years from 1991 to 2020 the last frost came earlier, in the other half later. Hardy plants like lettuce, spinach and peas can be sown from then.

What does “no more frost in 9 out of 10 years” mean?

After this date it froze again in only 3 of 30 years. For frost-tender plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes and beans it is the better date.

What counts as frost?

A day on which the air at 2 m drops below 0 °C. That is how the German weather service defines a frost day.

I live outside Germany. What can I do?

Our postcode data covers Germany only. Use your local last frost date in the planting calendar; the plant pages show the weeks before or after frost.

Why might it differ where I am?

We use the nearest weather station with enough years of data. If your garden is much higher or very different from the station, frost can come earlier or later.
