Raised bed soil calculator
Enter the inside size and the fill depth. We work out how many litres of soil and how many bags you need.
Step 1 of 3
How big is your raised bed?
Measure inside, without the walls.
How we work it out
Length × width × fill depth in centimetres, divided by 1,000, gives litres. For example 200 × 100 × 30 cm: 600,000 cm³, so 600 litres.
We round bags up: 600 litres are 15 bags of 40 litres, 12 of 50 litres or 9 of 70 litres.
Questions and answers
How much soil do I need for a 200 × 100 cm raised bed?
At 30 cm fill depth 600 litres, at 40 cm 800 litres. That is 15 or 20 bags of 40 litres.
How do I get litres from centimetres?
Length × width × depth in centimetres gives cubic centimetres. Divided by 1,000 that is litres, divided by 1,000,000 cubic metres.
How many bags of soil do I need?
Divide the litres by the size of one bag and round up. 600 litres are 15 bags of 40 litres or 9 bags of 70 litres.
